Traveling in a new or used RV gives you control over your traveling experiences in a way conventional traveling just can’t do! You’re not at the mercy of overcrowded resorts or flight delays (and cancellations!) that can cause hours of wasted time. Traveling in an RV puts you in the driver’s seat – literally – and allows you to really enjoy vacations like never before.
One way you can really make the most of your vacation and free up money for what you really want to do is to save money on gas. Here are a few RV tips for saving money on gas and improving your RV’s gas mileage.
Get By with a Little Help from Your…Gas Buddy
Say no to overpaying at the pump. The GasBuddy app scouts fuel prices within your immediate vicinity, so you can avoid the frustration of an expensive fill up only to see much cheaper prices a few more miles down the road. Find the app (it’s free!) in your app store.
Lose a Few Pounds
No, not you, silly. We’re talking about what you pack in your RV and being mindful of its starting weight. Lowering your overall towing weight helps improve your fuel economy. A few easy things you can do:
- Travel only with the amount of fresh water you need to reach your destination (not a full fresh tank). Once you’re there, you can refill.
- Same with groceries: travel only with the pantry items you need to get there. Then, take a quick grocery shopping trip once you’ve set up camp.
- Reduce all portable liquids to the bare minimum and try to use dry versions when you can. Water weighs a lot! This includes drinks (switch for drink mixes), kitchen and bathroom soaps, and detergents. Replace canned soups with dry mix versions for a lightweight trade.
- Replace or update camping gear with lightweight versions of the same.
Take Care of Your RV
Routine RV service can help keep your gas mileage at a premium! For example, clogged or dirty air filters, low tire pressure, and low batteries can all bog your engine down and force it to work harder, which – you guessed it – uses more fuel and causes your gas mileage to spiral. Maintaining your RV with regular service helps keep it in peak condition.
Our RV service department can help with that last tip, and we’re a phone call away. Contact us today to schedule some RV service and start enjoying vacations with even more freedom and control thanks to improved gas mileage!
